Since very few of us lived through the Great Depression it is good to hear a few difference between then and now. (BL)
"Pulitzer-Prize winning author and professor of history at Stanford University David M. Kennedy told Bloomberg radio Nov. 18 that the current financial crisis bears no comparison to the Great Depression.
"Well, we're not yet in anything remotely resembling the crisis, the scale of crisis of the Great Depression." When Franklin Roosevelt took office in 1933, 13 million Americans were unemployed. "That was 25 percent of the work force," Kennedy told Bloomberg host Tom Keene.
The professor laid out exactly what has changed since the troubled 1930s:" By Paul Detrick November 20, 2008 - 15:25

President-elect promised change, picking insiders
The only change that Obama is going to bring to Washington is European Socialism and a third term of the Clinton administration. Maybe this democratic president can keep his pants on in the Oval Office. 2 of the predesecors they compare Obama most to could not (Clinton and Kennedy) The change theme was one of the greatest marketing campaigns I have seen in history. Absolutly no truth which this article points to. Can you still sue people for false advertising?
(BL)
WASHINGTON (AP) - President-elect Barack Obama promised the voters change but has started his Cabinet selection process by naming several Washington insiders to top posts.
Obama is enlisting former Senate leader Tom Daschle as his health secretary. Hillary Rodham Clinton, a well-known Washington personality, seemed more likely than ever to be his secretary of state. Clinton is deciding whether to take that post as America's top diplomat, her associates said Wednesday
Obama is ready to announce that his attorney general will be Eric Holder, the Justice Department's No. 2 when Clinton's husband was president. Rahm Emanuel, Obama's chief of staff, is another veteran of the Clinton White House.
Daschle's selection to head the Health and Human Services Department—confirmed Wednesday but not yet announced—isn't at the same level of Cabinet prestige as the top spots at the State and Justice departments. But the health post could be more important in an Obama administration than in some others, making Daschle a key player in helping steer the president-elect's promised health care reforms.
Daschle could push Obama for quick action on health care reform next year, if he follows his own advice.
Daschle said efforts during the Clinton administration, led by Hillary Clinton, took too long and went into too much detail, giving every interest group an opportunity to find something they didn't like about the plan.
"The next president should act immediately to capitalize on the goodwill that greets any incoming administration. If that means attaching a health-care plan to the federal budget, so be it," Daschle wrote in a book he released this year, "Critical: What We Can Do About the Health-Care Crisis." "This issue is too important to be stalled by Senate protocol."
The former South Dakota senator's return to the government will be a vindication of sorts. He was the Senate Democratic leader when he was defeated in 2004 by Republican John Thune, who convinced voters back home that Daschle was more concerned with Washington than with them.
In fact, Daschle stayed in the capital city after his defeat, becoming a public policy adviser and member of the legislative and public policy group at the law and lobbying firm Alston & Bird. Daschle isn't registered as a lobbyist. He advises clients on issues including health care, financial services, taxes and trade, according to the firm's Web site.
Health care interests, including CVS Caremark, the National Association for Home Care and Hospice, Abbott Laboratories and HealthSouth, are among the firm's lobbying clients.
Daschle's appointment was not formally announced, but Democratic officials said the job was his barring an unforeseen problem as Obama's team reviews his background. One area of review will include the lobbying connections of his wife, Linda Hall Daschle, who has worked mostly on behalf of airline-related companies over the years. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
Republicans sniped at what they saw as an unwelcome trend. Alex Conant, spokesman for the Republican National Committee, said, "Barack Obama is filling his administration with longtime Washington insiders." Copyright 2008 The Associated Press. How Obama Got Elected - Crazy Video
Please select the link and watch the video. This just shows what idiots most Americas really are. You see stuff like this on T.V. all the time. Whether it is Jay Leno or Sean Hannity 'Man on the Street' or Howard Stern doing his interviews. Many Americas are stupid and ignorant or both. I do honestly believe you should be forced to pass a comptency test before you can vote. I know that offends many people but given these examples I think it has become necessary.
Here are some facts from a Zogby Poll:
512 Obama Voters 11/13/08-11/15/08 MOE +/- 4.4 points
97.1% High School Graduate or higher, 55% College Graduates
Results to 12 simple Multiple Choice Questions
Here are some facts from a Zogby Poll:
512 Obama Voters 11/13/08-11/15/08 MOE +/- 4.4 points
97.1% High School Graduate or higher, 55% College Graduates
Results to 12 simple Multiple Choice Questions
- 57.4% could NOT correctly say which party controls congress (50/50 shot just by guessing)
- 71.8% could NOT correctly say Joe Biden quit a previous campaign because of plagiarism (25% chance by guessing)
- 82.6% could NOT correctly say that Barack Obama won his first election by getting opponents kicked off the ballot (25% chance by guessing)
- 88.4% could NOT correctly say that Obama said his policies would likely bankrupt the coal industry and make energy rates skyrocket (25% chance by guessing)
- 56.1% could NOT correctly say Obama started his political career at the home of two former members of the Weather Underground (25% chance by guessing).
And yet..... - Only 13.7% failed to identify Sarah Palin as the person on which their party spent $150,000 in clothes
- Only 6.2% failed to identify Palin as the one with a pregnant teenage daughter
- And 86.9 % thought that Palin said that she could see Russia from her "house," even though that was Tina Fey who said that!!
- Only 2.4% got at least 11 correct.
- Only .5% got all of them correct. (And we "gave" one answer that was technically not Palin, but actually Tina Fey)
It is clear that the media did not do their job in this election. We knew that the media was biased but to have a man elected President of the free world with-out properly vetting him out and properly introducing hm to the American people is downright criminal. (BL)

The economy is really bad and things hear at Nortel (my employer) are even worse! I sat in accounting training all day on Tuesday and saw the attached chart about Bull and Bear Markets in the U.S. over the past 100 years. I found it to be very interesting. If history holds true, and we did go into a Bear Market in 2000, then we are only about half way through this mess. Very interesting research and graph. No wonder so many people hate Bush! If Bush were gifted the same economy as Clinton he would probably be listed as the best President ever. When all is said and done people vote selfishly with their check-books and when things aren't going great they punish those in charge (even though Republicans were not in charge).(BL)
2008 Vote Count in Minnesota Senate

Update: Nov 21
Are you kidding me!!!!Al Franken's campaign wants the state Canvassing Board to rule on whether it should count. This guy is a nut and I cannot understand how he got 3 votes! ( I can understand 2 votes...1 for each side of the mirror, but 3?)

I can't believe it is 2008 and we still cannot get this voting thing down. Isn't this one of the first stills they teach us in school growing up....how to count? This voting system needs to be overhauled.

This post is for you Dad. I know you love BBQ and since you are new to the State of North Carolina I thought you would enjoy it. I might have to buy you the book they are touting so that you can find some good 'Western Style' BBQ in Eastern North Carolina. Don't worry...it took me a while to get used to 'Eastern Style' when I moved to Raleigh. Now I love it! (BL)

Recession? Depression? What's the difference?
What is the difference between a recession and a depression? The depression word is being used a lot more in the news lately. I asked my buddies today and none of them actually knew. I remember my dad telling me about my grandfather storing tires and all kinds of stuff in his basement. Given the state of the economy I am wondering if I should starting storing things up like our grandparents used to. Should I start a garden to grow some food? The attached article helped me understand the difference a bit better.(BL)

Give public schools a chance (Obama)
Lets see if Obama puts his money where his mouth is and places his children in public schools. Very few of the memebers of the Federal Government are willing to send their children to the same public schools they tought being great for our children. I would like to see what Obama decides. My guess is that he will choose private as most politicians are not willing to practice what they preach. Let's see if Obama is the true candidate of change and breaks the trend. (BL)

Freedom of Speech
Are we losing our Freedom of Speech in this country? I have read a bunch of stories recently where people are being fired, arrested or expelled from organizations for saying or writing things on private internet blogs. I do not agree with things that may be written by these people on the internet but I do not agree that they should be fired even if they are public employees. I also do not believe college students should get in trouble for writing racist comments on a "Free Expression Wall". What we do on the internet is our own business and our employers should not be able to make employement decisions no matter what we write on the internet. Freedom of Speech is a necessary part of this Republic....even if I do not agree with what they say. (BL)

No End in sight to economic bailout
When is enough enough? I have a Accounting, Finance and Business background and still cannot understand the state of the U.S. Economy right now nor the way that the U.S. Government is handling it. When will the chaos stop? In the past few year the U.S. Taxpayers (now and future generations) have already bailed out the airline industry, the banking industry and now there is talk of a bailout for automobiles companies and home builders and more..... Where and when will this stop. How does the federal government decided who is acceptable to help and who should go bankrupt. What companies and industries will get helped and which one's won't. Why not small business and individuals. Bad management does not warrant government help. We have gone down a very slippery slope that I am not sure we can reverse.
Also, we are already hearing about mis-management of billion's of tax dollars for the bank bailout. Just wait...this is just the beginning of these stories. The Federal Government seems to mis-manage anything we give them control of. Why do we continue to give them more responsibility??? (BL)

Media Bias
This article and study attempted to prove left-wing media bias. This was an independent study done with no political affiliations by an indepent research council and UCLA. This data should be used to fight the proposed re-birth of the fairness doctrine. This also shows that when the left calls Fox and Drudge Report "Right Wing" what the mean is centrist. (BL)
http://newsroom.ucla.edu/portal/ucla/Media-Bias-Is-Real-Finds-UCLA-6664.aspx
"Five news outlets — "NewsHour With Jim Lehrer," ABC's "Good Morning America," CNN's "NewsNight With Aaron Brown," Fox News' "Special Report With Brit Hume" and the Drudge Report — were in a statistical dead heat in the race for the most centrist news outlet. Of the print media, USA Today was the most centrist."
"The researchers took numerous steps to safeguard against bias — or the appearance of same — in the work, which took close to three years to complete. They went to great lengths to ensure that as many research assistants supported Democratic candidate Al Gore in the 2000 election as supported President George Bush. They also sought no outside funding, a rarity in scholarly research.
"No matter the results, we feared our findings would've been suspect if we'd received support from any group that could be perceived as right- or left-leaning, so we consciously decided to fund this project only with our own salaries and research funds that our own universities provided," Groseclose said.
The results break new ground.
"Past researchers have been able to say whether an outlet is conservative or liberal, but no one has ever compared media outlets to lawmakers," Groseclose said. "Our work gives a precise characterization of the bias and relates it to known commodity — politicians."

Watering the lawn in Raleigh
Tonight is Tuesday and according to the City of Raleigh 'I think' I can water my lawn. Water restrictions were put in place a couple of years ago during a prolonged drought in the summer of 2006. These restrictions have never been fully lifted and I suspect they probably never will be. This is very frustrating....especially during Autumn when many people in Raleigh North Carolina re-seed their fescue lawns. According to the City of Raleigh I have certain days I am allowed to water: http://www.raleighnc.gov/portal/server.pt/gateway/PTARGS_0_2_306_202_0_43/http;/pt03/DIG_Web_Content/category/Resident/Environment/Cat-FAQ-2007601-114142-Year_Round_Lawn_Irrigati.html
My frustration comes in the fact that Falls Lake (the source for Raleigh's water) has been full or overfull for many months. In fact the lake has been so full that the Army Corp of Engineers are releasing water downstream daily. According to http://www.unc.edu/depts/cmse/science/Falls.html Falls Lake normal level is 250.1 feet. Today's lake level was 250.41 http://epec.saw.usace.army.mil/dailyrep.txt after water was released downstream. It is so frustrating for water to be released downstream when I would like to pay for it and use it in my yard daily. It is also very frustrating trying to understand the day's when I am allowed to water and the days I am not. In fact the only way I can remember my 'safe watering days' was to set up a reminder in my Blackberry's phone calender on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday from 6am to 10am and 6pm to 10pm. Of course if I had a built in watering system the day's and times would be different. This is a perfect example of the inefficiences in government. Couldn't they just put a web site in place they gave us the green light on days when the lake is full and we are allowed to water and a red light when lake level's are dropping and we need to hold back. I agree we needed restrictions last summer. Once back to normal we need to lift the restrictions and use and efficient and clear watering policy that support the people who pay for it. Common sense management can work!

North Carolina's governor canceled the state's planned purchase of a $9 million passenger jet
http://www.news-record.com/content/2008/10/09/article/easley_nixes_purchase_of_state_jet
"A plane is not necessary," said Easley spokeswoman Sherry Johnson. "It's not going to be purchased in this economy."
I am glad that the State and Easley decided not to continue with this purchase. Why was this even being done at all? The State says that it needs a plane to bring investment into the State. I am not sure if they have ever heard of "Chartering" vs. owning. I work in the private sector and most of us fly commercial or at best charter. The State of North Carolina getting into the plane ownership business is a joke. You can charter a heck of a lot of flights for 9M dollars! I say fly commercial like the rest of us.

Thanks for nothing. The Federal Governement seems willing to step in and try to fix about every issue except practicle one's where they could really help. After forming a task force, paid for by the American tax-payer, it was decided to leave the airlines to their own devices regarding stranding passagengers on the runway. (BL)

Night out with the boys
Veterans Day - What is the significance of 11?
"The significance of 11 a.m. is that the treaty to end World War I was signed at the 11th hour on the 11th day of November 1918," Statler said.
Between World War I and World War II, Nov. 11 was designated Armistice Day in the United States, Great Britain and France. After World War II, the holiday became a day of tribute to veterans of both world wars.
Beginning in 1954, the United States designated Nov. 11 as Veterans Day to honor veterans of all U.S. wars.

Obama will establish a Gestapo-like security force to impose a Marxist or fascist dictatorship?
http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/11/10/republican-congressman-warns-obama-dictatorship/
I find this very hard to believe and hope this does not happen. If Obama start's to build a Federal security force we will need to stand up and not allow this to happen. This is why the supreme court is so important! It acts as a check against the Leglislative and Executive Branches oversteping their boundaries. I would have been the first to stand up against Bush if he had done something like this. This is dangerous and unconstitutional.

Brit Hume Retiring
Good for you Brit!
Brit Hume on retirement:
"I thought about the three G’s: God, granddaughters, golf. That’s not comprehensive, because obviously I have a chance to spend more time with my dear wife, who worked with me here for so many years and was a vice president and bureau chief. She retired two years ago. … And since my son died, I have been, really, I felt rescued by God and by Christ. I have an intense desire to pursue that more ardently and have it be a bigger part of my life than it has been."
http://pursuingholiness.com/2008/11/10/brit-hume-on-his-plans-for-retirement/
"I certainly want to pursue my faith more ardently than I have done. I'm not claiming it's impossible to do when you work in this business. I was kind of a nominal Christian for the longest time. When my son died (by suicide in 1998), I came to Christ in a way that was very meaningful to me. If a person is a Christian and tries to face up to the implications of what you say you believe, it's a pretty big thing. If you do it part time, you're not really living it.From another interview:

Wake County Schools Report Card
http://www.newsobserver.com/content/media/2008/11/7/1107_ABC_reportcard_.20081106180201.pdf
I just reviewed the 2008 public school report card. My children are assigned to a school called Stough. 61% of the students are at grade level. This makes me so excited to know that just under half of my child's class will be below grade level. WOW. Are you kidding me. Stough had one of the lowest levels in Wake County which is ridiculous considering the area of town we live in. I also read that it would be very hard for my children to get into the magnet programs due to the fact that Stough was not over-crowded. I am encouraged that my children will not get trampled in the hall but I am concerened that they will not learn much while they are there.

Test performance falls for state's students

I am sure an article will follow this one that talks about how Wake County Schools need more money. Lack of resources seems to always be the excuse for public schools short-comings. However, the more money we throw at the problem the lower the scoring gets. Social-monopolistic schools are not working and have not been working for a long time. The public schools sytem needs an overhaul no more money!

Broughton High will keep magnet status
http://www.newsobserver.com/news/education/wake/story/1263909.html
Don't get me wrong. Broughton is a good public schools and I would be fine if my children went to Broughton as Magnet students. I do not understand why Broughton is listed as a magnet school. People are moving to expensive neighborhoods just so their children can go to Broughton. I thought magnet schools were set up to bring children to schools that people did not want to send their kids to in tough or depressed areas of town. Broughton is neither and should not be magnet!

CNN had the best election website

I hate to admit this but CNN actually had the best election coverage on the web I could find. I can't watch CNN T.V. but the website was pretty interactive and cool.

Politically Incorrect Guide To Politics
There was a great show I saw recently on 20/20. Yes you heard me correctly. ABC's 20/20 and John Stossel is actually a mainstream media member I can listen to. He make's common sense and actually does what appears to be non-partisan research and stories. Both my wife and I found this series to be enjoyable, informative and entertaining. Please watch and enjoy:

The Treatment of Bush Has Been a Disgrace
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122584386627599251.html
I appreciate George W. Bush and wish him the best. I believe that history will judge Bush much more favorably than the current pop-culture and left-wing media do. Many of this Country's most popular and best Presidents had low approval ratings as they left office. Once historians and the public are removed from the presidency they have a chance to more accuratly reflect on the legacy of each president. I anticipate Bush will have a much better legact in the future than he currently will. Thank You W.

Obama’s Views Not Consistent With Christianity, Conservative Says
http://www.cnsnews.com/public/content/article.aspx?RsrcID=33721
How people who call themselves Christian's and continue to vote for people who represent the immoral activity being supported by the left wing confuse me. Liberal's values are not even close to consistent with the Bible's teaching. We all need to read our Bible more!

Obama doesn't want his daughters "Punished with a baby"
http://thesop.org/index.php?article=10403
Christian Defense Coalition calls for Obama Apology due to the fact that Obama had the following quote: Senator Obama recently made this statement speculating if one of his two young daughters became pregnant. He said, "But if they made a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby."
His views are so wrong. I will pray that he has a change of heart. Obama seems to have a passion for the underprivelaged. What about unborn children? He supports their murder.

Unfortunatly, this election had consequences. This article discusses some of them. I pray they do not come true. Focus on The Family published this article and although fiction...I believe some of this might come true.

A national holiday in honor of Obama
http://special.cjonline.com/stories/110908/loc_353922770.shtml
I thought we already had a Presidents Day and we celebrate Martin Luther King Day and we have Black History month. I agree that the election of a Black President is historical and should be noted and remembered. Let's use some common sense folks. If we want to change MLK Day to Black History Rememberence Day OK but another holiday? I am all for another day off from work but this is getting a little ridiculous. Does every minority group that does something special deserve a special day. There are only 365 days in a year. I guess the left is already trying to get rid of Christmas so maybe that will free on up?

Condoms Trump Abstinence in Obama Global AIDS Policy

This isn't a surprise. Why would we push abstinence. Democrats are on the wrong side of every moral issue. I am not sure how anyone who claims to be a Christian can vote for Democrats? They seem to support every immoral issue possible.
